Images: npsl.png  MATCH 10:  BAVARIAN – 4, MINNESOTA 1.  July 18, 2010, Glendale, WI.  For the second game on a blistering summer weekend, Bavarian started out hot against the Minnesota Kings when Cyril Simmons (Tim Lancina) notched his sixth goal of the season in the 6’.  That would be all the scoring in the first half but the temperature and tempers continued to rise.  Twenty-four fouls, including three yellow cards and two red cards, would mark the wild and wooly affair.  Jonny Bebeau gave Bavarian a two goal lead in the 56’ with an inspired run and score but Minnesota kept battling and found the net in the 77’.  Meanwhile, tempers flaired.  Tony Patterson had to leave the match in the first half after a collision put his front teeth through his lip, and Chris Madsen was flagrantly slapped in the face by a Minnesota player.  No foul was called on either play.  The final fifteen minutes were wild but Bavarians’ conditioning proved to be the difference as they sliced through a weary Kings defense.  Bebeau struck again in the 85’ then, as regular time expired, Chris Madsen broke behind the Kings defense and would have put the ball way had the Kings keeper not wrapped him up and body slammed him to the ground like a “professional” wrestler.  Both benches cleared and players squared off.  Order was restored until a Kings player, walking off the field 50 yards from the melee, head-butted Bavarian Stu Grable in the face.  Unbelievable!  The Kings keeper and player were immediately sent off.  Bebeau calmly converted the PK for his third goal of the match and a 4-1 victory to end the season. After the match, Bavarian coach Andreas Davi hosted a sideline gathering for the crowd, including Insider Club members, thanking fans for their steadfast and enthusiastic support throughout the season.

MATCH 9:  BAVARIAN 2, ST. PAUL – 3.
July 17, 2010, Glendale, WI.  Bavarian finally turned the tables to open a match.  After conceding early goals in the prior two games, our guys jumped on top of the St. Paul Twin Stars in the 6’ when Amilcar Herrera headed in a cross from Jonny Bebeau.  The thrill was mitigated somewhat when Bryan Samuel had to leave the match with a broken collarbone.  Bavarian had a chance for another in the 14’ but Tony Patterson’s PK was stopped by the Twin Stars’ keeper.  St. Paul got back in the match with a goal in the 28’ but Cyril Simmons put Bavarian back on top with an unassisted goal in the 33’, his fifth of the season.  St. Paul made a key second half substitution when Talez entered the match, and his fresh legs paid off quickly with a tying goal in the 59’.  But our guys turned up the heat in the final fifteen minutes.  Scott Raymonds’ potential game winner struck the crossbar, and Chris Madsen’s shot in the 82’ beat the St. Paul keeper but went wide right by just a ball’s width.  The boisterous crowd thought a draw was inevitable until the Twin Stars’ Talez struck again in the 88’ with the game winner for St. Paul.

MATCH 8:  BAVARIAN – 1, MADISON – 2.
July 7, 2010, Glendale, WI.  A hundred fans enjoyed a balmy summer evening as Bavarian battled in-state rival and league-leading, Madison 56ers.  Overall, the match was well played and spirited with each side having several good scoring chances, and each goalkeeper making three fantastic saves.  The match got off to a rough start when, at just the 4’ mark, 56ers’ Keenan Newallo fired a 20-yard rocket that beat Bavarian goalkeeper David Check to the upper 90.  But our guys settled down and leveled the match in the 27’ when Adam Skalecki received a terrific cross from Scott Raymond just inside the box and slotted it past the Madison keeper.  A half hour later, in the 55’, Madison scored again on a play nearly identical to Bavarians, and that would prove to be the gamewinner.  While the loss eliminates Bavarian from championship contention, it doesn’t mean the end of entertaining and high quality soccer.  Bavarian’s next match is 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 17 vs St. Paul Twin Stars.

MATCH 7:  BAVARIAN – 2, CHICAGO – 3.  July 1, 2010, Libertyville, IL.  As Coach Davi says, “It’s hard to tell your team how well they’re playing when you still lose,” but that was exactly the case as our Boys in Blue fell to the Chicago Fire in Libertyville.  A young, patchwork lineup – including three midfielders making their debut as defenders – weathered a rough start, conceding two goals in the first fifteen minutes, then stormed back to play perhaps their best 75 minutes of the season.  The action was end to end as each side had several good scoring chances.  Chicago took a three-goal lead in the 60’ but then Bavarian started cashing in.  Tony Patterson scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 72’, then Amilcar Herrera (Jonny Bebeau) scored in the 77’ and Chicago was reeling.  Scott Raymonds, Bebeau and Kinkade Lo had excellent chances in the closing minutes but just couldn’t find the net.  Coach Davi summed it up when he observed, “The Chicago keeper was their best player tonight.”  Bavarian now return home for a rematch with conference leader Madison 56ers on Wednesday, July 7 at 7:30 pm.

MATCH 6:  BAVARIAN – 5, EAU CLAIRE – 1.
Bavarian returned to its winning ways with a convincing 5-1 victory over Aris FC in Eau Claire, sweeping the season series.  Cyril Simmons opened the scoring and our guys just kept pounding the net thereafter.  Simmons added a second, Colin Monahan had two and Tony Patterson added another. Solid team defense provided plenty of protection for goalkeeper David Check.  The win keeps Bavarian in control of its destiny for the Midwest Conference title but we must “run the table”.  The team’s next match (and last on the road) is scheduled for 7:30 pm on Thursday, July 1 in Chicago vs Chicago Fire.

MATCH 5:  BAVARIAN – 1, MADISON – 3.  June 12, Madison, WI.  Bavarian dropped a tough one in Madison, losing 3-1 to the 56ers.  Our guys started slowly and found themselves down a goal just fifteen minutes into the match but the boys hung tough, leveling the score just before halftime on a header by Cy Simmons, assisted by captain Chris Lins.  The second half started like the first, however, and Madison retook the lead for good in the 55’.  So, halfway through the season, Bavarian are tied for third in the Midwest Conference with two wins, two losses and one tie.  Every team has at least one loss, and we play each team again, so we can retake control if we run the table.  The next match will be played on Sunday, June 20 in Eau Claire, and our U20 team will compete in the USASA Region II championships on Friday and Saturday.

MATCH 4:  BAVARIAN - 2, ST. PAUL - 4.
June 7, Minneapolis, MN.  The St. Paul Twin Stars is a fast and athletic team.  Their three forwards kept constant pressure on our 3-5-2 formation and scored twice in the 21’ and 26’ to put us behind for the first time this season. Coach Davi’s change to a 4-4-2 restored order to the match, and Cyril Simmons responded with a breakaway goal in the 32’.  We held St. Paul at bay in the first thirty minutes of the second half but couldn’t get the offense going so Coach reverted to a more attack-oriented 3-4-3 formation.  The change generated chances for both sides, however, and St. Paul struck twice more.  Jose Alfaro (Simmons) closed out the scoring in the 78’ but the match ended a 4-2 victory for St. Paul.

MATCH 3:  BAVARIAN - 2, MINNESOTA - 1.
June 6, Maple Grove, MN.  Our weekend opener was a victory over an experienced and disciplined Minnesota Kings side but Dan Madsen provided the offensive punch we needed, scoring both goals late in each half in the 43’ (assisted by Cyril Simmons) and in the 75’ (Amilcar Herrara).  Kings tallied in added time but we prevailed 2-1.

MATCH 2:  BAVARIAN – 2, CHICAGO – 2.
May 26, Glendale, WI.  On a warm, damp evening that felt more like mid-summer than late spring, we hosted Chicago Fire in a hard-fought match that ended in a 2-2 draw.  We twice took the lead but just couldn’t extinguish the Fire.  We started in high gear, taking an early lead in the 16’ when Tony Patterson (Chris Madsen) headed a corner kick just inside the post and past the Chicago goalkeeper but the Fire struck back in the 23’ on a restart, hitting a 20-yard bender around the Bavarian wall and into the net.  Madsen regained the lead for Bavarian in the 43’ with a rocket launched from just outside the box but the Fire took the momentum into halftime when they collected a loose ball in the Bavarian goalmouth and pushed it past keeper David Check to level the score at 2-2.  The Fire turned it up a notch in the second half but neither side could score despite several good chances.  Check and the Fire keeper each had several terrific saves to keep their teams in the match.  “A draw is a fair result,” said Bavarian coach Andreas Davi.  “We had to scramble a bit after losing two important defenders but the guys played well and we got a point.”

MATCH 1:  BAVARIAN – 3, EAU CLAIRE – 1.
May 23, Glendale, WI.  The team opened the 2010 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Eau Claire Aris FC.  Chris Madsen (Amilcar Herrera) opened the scoring in the 18’ and the teams fought end-to-end until the 71’ when Jake Provan (Scott Raymonds) notched the eventual game winner.  Raymonds capped off the scoring in the 88’.  Goalkeeper David Check made several outstanding saves to seal the victory.  “It was the expected hard game,” said Coach Andreas Davi, “but we were prepared and in charge of the game.  Nevertheless, we were happy to hear the final whistle!”
